Aikane Plantation Coffee is grown on the slopes of the majestic Mauna Loa Mountain in the District of Ka`u by Phil and Merle Becker. The rich and full-bodied flavor of 100% Ka`u coffee was born in 1894 when the first coffee tree was planted by “Papa” J.C. Searle, Merle’s great-grandfather. More than a century later, Phil and Merle chose to return to the family estate and established Aikane Plantation Coffee Company.
Merle proudly says, “Aikane Plantation Coffee is unique because it has been with one family since 1894. We are located several miles from any other coffee farm so there is little chance of cross pollination. Our coffee is a true ‘Old Hawaiian Coffee.'”
The coffee cherries are hand-picked, washed, sun-dried, and roasted to a Medium-Dark Roast and immediately packaged with freshness. Using solar panels for electricity and a rain catching system for water, with no pesticides but compost, coffee pulp and macadamia husks for fertilizer, the company operation is truly green.
Phil emphasizes on the quality, “Quality means everything to us. We want to be proud of our coffee and the only way to do so is to keep the quality at its highest.”
In the eye-catching purple color bag, Aikane Plantation Coffee is easily found on the shelf of Bishop Museum, Blue Hawaii Lifestyles, Menehune Mac, Military Commissaries in Hawaii, Na Mea Book Store, and Shirokiya at Ala Moana Center. Restaurants such as Alan Wong’s, Red Ginger Café at Manoa Market Place are also serving Aikane Plantation Coffee to their customers.
