Founded in December 2000, Kamiya Gold is a 25-acre farm, located on Oahu’s NorthShore. Although the company is relatively young, company President Kenneth Kamiya has been growing papayas for over 30 years.
By customer demand, the Kamiya premium papaya was personally selected as the ideal product after many years of growing papayas. Writer Jocelyn Fujii also chose this papaya as the best of Honolulu. “(We are) always and consistently meeting customers’ expectations,” says Kenneth Kamiya.
Grown only on Oahu for the local market, Kamiya is a rounder, larger fruit than other papaya varieties. It is distinguished by its thin, greenish-yellow skin and thick orange flesh. When the papaya yields to finger pressure, it is ripe. (Do not depend on the color of its skin, unlike other papaya varieties.) Ripe papayas should be refrigerated and will keep up to a week. However, it is recommended to eat them within a day or two.
Papayas are considered to be very nutritious and are rich in potassium, vitamin A, vitamin C and beta carotene. In fact, the Center for Science in the Public Interest has ranked papayas as the fifth healthiest fruit, based on a scoring system of each fruit’s nutritional value.
Kamiya Gold’s papayas can be found at all Times Supermarkets, Tamashiro Market, Best Market, Song Produce, Marukin Market and Keeaumoku Produce.
