Honokaa, Hawaii 96727
On the Hamakua Coast of the Big Island, Mauna Kea Tea began planting in 2005 but plants needed time to mature. After realizing they had such a high-quality product, they began making sales in 2008 and have steadily increased as some fields are still maturing. The company is a small family operation, run by two people with two children and numerous volunteers. What makes their company so special is that they are currently one of very few domestic growers/producers of Certified Organic Green and Oolong Tea. Their teas compete with those produced worldwide. Another aspect which makes their teas high quality is not compromising attention to detail from planting until it is in each customer’s cup. Taka Ino, a farmer and tea maker at Mauna Kea Tea says, “Quality is everything.” Their Certified Organic Green and Oolong teas are grown, processed, and packaged on site. Mauna Kea Tea is certified by The Hawaii Seal of Quality for the following products: Premium Green Tea, Premium Oolong Tea, Island Green Tea, Island Oolong Tea, Island Green Tea – Orchid Dew, and Sweet Roast Green Tea.
Taka Ino also states, “As these teas are made in Hawaii, we are not bound to a conventional style of production. This gives us the ability to make something wonderfully traditional, yet creative and new.” Mauna Kea Tea products are sold directly from the farm, at their online store, Waimea Homestead Farmer’s Market, various gift shops, health food stores, cafes, hotels, restaurants, and numerous specialty tea shops.
