The Hawaii Shrimp Health Certification Program (SHCP) provides disease surveillance to shrimp broodstock and seedstock producers. It was established in the early 1980s, after three important cultured species were introduced to the state. The objectives of the program are to enhance the capacity to prevent, detect and respond to disease events and to provide a source of specific pathogen-free (SPF) shrimp to the aquaculture industry. The SHCP follows the World Organization for Animal Health’s (OIE) aquatic animal health code on disease surveillance (Chapter 1.4, Article 1.4.6). Participating shrimp operations are continuously monitored and tested for specific diseases. Those that test negative for 2 years or more are considered SPF.
