Hamakua Macadamia Nut Company grows, processes and markets 100 percent Hawaiian macadamia nuts. These nuts are monitored from the time they drop from the tree until they are shipped to the customer.
“Quality to Hamakua Macadamia Nut Company and its employees means selecting the very best materials to produce the very best possible products for our customers and paying close attention to every aspect of the process, from the beginning through (the end), until it is in the hands of a satisfied customer,” says Richard Schnitzler. “Quality at Hamakua Macadamia Nut Company is about always raising the bar, always trying to improve our existing quality and never being satisfied with the idea that a product can’t be improved upon. We are proud of every product that we distribute to our customers. If we are not satisfied with the quality of a product, we pull it from the market.”
The company uses the macadamia nut shells as a source of “green” energy to produce steam for drying its nuts. It currently is looking at ways to expand this energy source into electricity, towards becoming sustainable. Just over six pounds of macadamia nut shells produce one kilowatt hour of electricity, and the farm has enough shells to meet the company’s electrical needs.
Founded in 1993, the 600-acre farm employs 50 people and also purchases crop from over 200 independent growers on the Big Island. Products include roasted, salted and flavored macadamia nuts, brittle and popcorn, which can be purchased in stores throughout Hawaii, as well as in Japan, Taiwan, Guam and Hong Kong.
