Declaration provides financial assistance to affected farmers and ranchers

U.S. Sec. of Agriculture Thomas J. Vilsack has informed Gov. Neil Abercrombie that the Counties of Maui and Hawaii have been declared disaster areas due to prolonged drought.

The disaster designation allows the USDA’s Farm Service Agency (FSA) to provide assistance to qualified farmers and ranchers, such as emergency loans.  Farmers and ranchers have eight months to apply for assistance at their nearest FSA office.
