Farm to School Zone at 2016 Children & Youth Day was a great success!
KALO OUTREACH – with generous funding from Office of Hawaiian Affairs, HDOA’s Farm to School Program gave away 1,000 kalo huli to 150 different families & groups (Hawaii Youth Challenge Academy, Schools, etc.)!
- Some folks heard the announcement about this kalo opportunity and were looking for us, others had never thought about it before but were excited to try… all were grateful for the opportunity to plant kalo with their keiki!
- 120 kalo huli were reserved online before the event started!
- Kalani, our CTAHR Master Gardner answered many growing questions form the families and helped them develop a plan to care for Haloa with their keiki.
- L.G.’S F2S COLORING CONTEST: We had our first few first submittals for our calendar artwork coloring contest!
- CREATING SEED PACKETS: We helped about 50 keiki do seed packets and learning how to grow seeds to take them home to plant with help by our Maui School Garden Network Coordinator & McKinley High School FFA Student!
- LEARNING HOW FOOD GROWS: We did a lot of interaction on how your food grows (as a fruit, flower, seed, stem, etc.) for healthy eating habits with Department of Health’s School Health.
- F2S SPIN THE WHEEL: The F2S conversation wheel was a great success with a line out the tent! We used the wheel to start conversations with keiki on how they make F2S connections (school gardens, growing their food, buying local, etc)… Then talked to them about growing kalo.
- Kalo videos played while families waited in line, and were emailed with a list of resources for families to care for their kalo.
